Willy Bay Resort
Willy Bay is a resort set in tranquil bushland in the south-west of WA just outside Margaret River. The client’s vision was to capture the growing wedding and business market by introducing a function centre, and increasing the accommodation by adding seven twin-key chalets to the existing ten.
Cameron Chisholm Nicol was appointed to master plan the new facilities to complement the existing resort, paying particular attention to achieving a natural, ‘down south’ aesthetic through material use and setting. Natural light and ventilation were also key considerations.
The function centre, on the banks of a substantial dam, is a focal point for arrival and marketing. Key issues addressed include:
• the environmental design interface with the bush, particularly water and the fire plan;
• compliance with pre-existing strata plans providing provision for future change;
• designing for future growth and adaptive re-use, including an expanded kitchen and dining service and provision of a chapel and day spa; and
• working with an internationally-based client to assist in setting up contact with local builders and suppliers.
The outcome is an appealing function centre and expanded accommodation facilities which successfully capture the desired ambiance and meet the client’s marketing aspirations.
