Cameron Chisholm Nicol were awarded with the contract for Stage 1 of the Toodyay Sports and Recreation Precinct in 2018. The precinct consists of an Aquatic Center including a 8 lane 25m Aquatic Center including a leisure pool, a new Soccer, Rugby and Hockey Sports Field, 8 new Courts for Basketball, Netball and Tennis and a Kids Play Area. A community pavilion clubhouse and change facilities are also provided and shared by all users. After a successful community engagement process for the masterplans and concept designs, CCN prepared tender documentation for the project and provided construction services during construction. The project will reach Practical Completion in September 2020. The project aims to improve community connection and social inclusion in Toodyay and sustain the growth of the township.
Following engagement, CCN undertook a review of the previous masterplan, resulting in a new masterplan concept with improved connectivity to the various sports facilities with clearly defined pedestrian and separated service access and better utilisation of the contours of the sloping site for enhanced universal access and circulation.
The precinct capitalises on the sloping site by creating multiple terraced seating opportunities overlooking the playing fields and courts. The architectural expression of the aquatic center building takes it’s inspiration from the rural shed vernacular of the district, whilst the face brick facade of the community pavilion references the traditional masonry construction of historic buildings in the Toodyay township.
