Newman town square opens

Keat Tan flew to Newman recently for the opening of the Newman town square. Master planned and designed by Cameron Chisholm Nicol in close collaboration with landscape architects UDLA, the project completes the final stage of Newman’s town centre revitalisation plan and creates a vibrant new social hub for the Pilbara town.

The Square was officially opened by Shire of East Pilbara president Lynne Craigie, and was celebrated with an evening of free entertainment on the newly completed stage and media screen. A full weekend of activities, including music, stage shows, food markets and movies, followed.

Extensive community consultation informed the design of new square, and the opening was a great opportunity to see the space fully activated. Children enjoyed interacting with the interpretive artworks, and families were able to picnic on the lawn whilst watching the performances.

The community reference group for the project envisaged the town square as a catalyst to move the town away from a mining camp mentality towards a more permanent and modern identity. Now realised as an attractive meeting place with a high level of community amenity, we hope that The Square will be embraced by the community and usher in a new era of social and economic development for Newman.
