The Shire of Mundaring engaged Cameron Chisholm Nicol to create a concept plan for a multi-purpose indoor sports facility. The new facility will augment a group of existing outdoor courts which cater for basketball, netball and hockey. Developed in consultation with representatives from each of the three sporting groups, the indoor facility addresses growth requirements through the provision of a hardcourt with combined line markings. This will allow for configuration of additional basketball, netball and hockey courts suitable for year-round use. In addition, the courts will be marked for badminton, volleyball and Futsal.

The new facility will service both the indoor and outdoor courts via a central entrance and common amenities, creating a social hub for the precinct. Design considerations include ensuring that the building’s height and floor surface meet the technical requirements of the different sporting codes, and allowing for flexible seating arrangements to cater for court orientation and a netball/basketball show court. Amenities will include a foyer with ticketing capacity, a kiosk and commercial kitchen, an office, meeting rooms, a first-aid room, change rooms, toilets and storage facilities.

Design strategies aim to reduce the need for artificial lighting without compromising on heat loading. Natural ventilation, capturing the prevailing winds and utilising thermal convection, will maintain a comfortable temperature year-round whilst minimising energy consumption. A gutterless roof design minimises fire risk.

The new facility will support Mundaring’s existing sporting teams whilst encouraging wider participation and providing a valuable new community asset.
