Urban design and master planning
Cameron Chisholm Nicol worked with Match Developments as part of a consortium of design consultants which was shortlisted by LandCorp for the Knutsford Urban Renewal project in Fremantle. The competition brief sought a visionary approach that would set a new benchmark for urban renewal master planning in Western Australia.
Our approach overlays and develops existing Fremantle planning patterns whilst responding sensitively to the topographical features and the industrial heritage of the precinct. A diverse range of housing types addresses urban consolidation, the needs of an aging population and a range of socio-economic groups. This includes Foundation social housing, apartments, and attached and detached housing. Typical Fremantle characteristics such as small front setbacks encourage social interaction, and parking at the front or rear discourages the dominance of driveways. Rear lanes are also activated by mews-style housing and pocket parks to provide high quality urban design outcomes.
Flexible house planning and construction were proposed to facilitate granny flat designs that could support tenants or home offices on a single lot, or modular construction which could evolve with the needs of owners.
