Horizon Power’s brief for this regional project was for a 3,000m2 light industrial facility, including workshop, truck garages and yard store, and 1,000mof commercial office space. The budget was already tight due to the three year gap between the budget approval and commencement of the design. In addition, the client’s project team wanted to incorporate significant sustainability initiatives.

Using a life-of-building costings approach, we built a business case for additional funding for the sustainability measures, which was successfully taken to the Horizon Power board. As a result, the depot has wind turbines, PV cells, storm water harvesting, rain water collection and reuse, and other energy saving inclusions. The depot generates all its power from renewable sources during the week, and on the weekend returns power back to the grid.

Early involvement of the builder, who had specialist knowledge in steelwork design, was key to bringing the project in on budget. Many of the builder’s standard details were incorporated into the design to avoid potential construction issues. Due to the regional location, pre-fabricated components were included to reduce the requirement for specialist contractors on site, and also ensure high levels of workmanship through factory inspection by the architect and client prior to delivery.

The resulting facility satisfies the needs of Horizon Power’s expanded workforce and operations, meeting the budget whilst delivering on-going cost savings through comprehensive sustainability initiatives.
