Cameron Chisholm Nicol were invited by the Government of Oman to submit a concept for the masterplanning and design of Al Musannah Sports City, a new sport and entertainment precinct near Muscat. The brief sought a contemporary yet contextual design vision that meets international sports design standards whilst creating a unique sense of place and a showcase for Omani culture.
The vision for the 1,014,348m² site incorporates five distinct zones representing sport, training, retail, culture and entertainment, and a future investment zone (for accommodation, commercial and healthcare).
The sport zone includes a 57,000 seat stadium, a 5,500 capacity multi-purpose sports hall, a 7,350 capacity tennis venue, a secondary 23,750 capacity sports field and an aquatic centre.
The training zone incorporates training facilities and athlete accommodation, whilst the cultural and entertainment zone includes a recreation centre and health club, ice-skating rink, restaurants and cinemas.
For the initial tender, a master plan for the entire site and a concept design for the main stadium have been developed, drawing inspiration from Oman’s historical role as a trade centre and from the country’s distinctive vernacular architecture.
